Is my child ready for kindergarten math?

What “ready” actually means (hint: it isn’t counting to 100), the five pillars of early number sense, a summer plan made of two-minute games — and permission to relax.

Every summer, a few months before school starts, the same quiet worry moves into houses with four- and five-year-olds. It usually sounds like a question about counting — should she be able to count to fifty? a hundred? — and it usually gets answered by a neighbor, a Facebook group, or a workbook cover, all of which are confidently wrong in different directions.

Here is the honest version. Kindergarten math readiness has surprisingly little to do with how high a child can count, and almost everything to do with five smaller, quieter skills that most parents have never heard named. A child can recite numbers to one hundred and be missing three of the five; a child who only counts to fifteen can have all of them and be more than ready. This guide names the five, shows you how to spot each one at the kitchen table without anything that feels like a test, and gives you a summer plan built from two-minute games. Counting high is the wrong scoreboard

Reciting the number sequence is a real skill — it’s the alphabet song of math — but it’s memorized music, not number sense. The proof is a test you can run tonight: ask your child to count five crackers, and when they finish, ask “so how many crackers are there?” A surprising number of fluent little counters will… count them again. They performed the song perfectly, but the idea that the last number said is the amount hasn’t landed yet. That idea has a name — cardinality — and it is worth more than the next fifty numbers of the sequence combined.

The five pillars, named

1 · Rote counting

Says the sequence.

Touches one object per number said.

No skips, no doubles.

3 · Cardinality

Knows the last number said IS the amount.

Ask again — no recount.

Rote counting is the sequence itself — useful, memorized, and the least predictive of the five. The teens are the genuinely hard part (“eleven” and “twelve” follow no rule and “thirteen” is backwards), so a child who stalls there is fighting the English language, not mathematics.

One-to-one correspondence is the discipline of touching exactly one object per number said — no skips, no doubles. Watch their finger, not their voice: a child who chants to ten while tapping seven objects is singing, not counting.

Cardinality is the cracker test above — knowing the count means something. It arrives suddenly, like a light switch, usually somewhere in the fours, and once it’s on, it stays on.

Subitizing — rhymes with “due-buh-tizing,” from the Latin for sudden — is instantly seeing small amounts without counting. You do it every time you read dice. It matters because it’s the seed of every arithmetic strategy: a child who sees four as “two and two” is already doing addition, quietly, before anyone teaches it.

Comparison is judging more and fewer — and being able to defend the call. “Fewer” lags “more” by months in most kids, because the word is rarer and the judgment flips; that lag is normal, not a gap.

The summer plan: two-minute games, no table required

None of this needs worksheets in July. It needs noticing-moments, dozens of them, wired into life you’re already living. The whole plan fits in one table:

What not to do (with love)

Three well-meaning moves reliably backfire. Don’t drill the sequence past twenty — the return on numbers 21–100 is tiny compared to cardinality and subitizing, and drilling is how four-year-olds learn that numbers are a chore. Don’t buy the giant workbook yet — at this age, pencil control lags number sense by a year or more, and a child who can’t write a 5 may understand fiveness perfectly; conflating the two frustrates everyone. And don’t compare out loud — not to siblings, not to the neighbor’s kid who allegedly does multiplication. Readiness ranges at this age are enormous, and children overhear everything.

“Not yet” is a normal answer

Here’s the section the workbook covers skip. The developmental range walking into any kindergarten classroom is years wide — a just-turned-five with a summer birthday and an almost-six are both exactly on time. If your checklist comes back with a pile of “sometimes,” that isn’t a red flag; it’s a July snapshot of a moving target, and the games above are the response. Recheck in a month and watch the column migrate.

The only pattern worth a conversation: if months of relaxed, playful exposure move nothing at all — the count stays tangled, quantities stay invisible, and it travels with other things you’ve wondered about — mention it at the next pediatrician visit or to the school’s kindergarten screener. Early support works best early, screening is routine, and asking costs nothing. Everyone else: the summer is long, the games are short, and they are already becoming a person who counts the stairs.

Fair questions, straight answers

How high should my child count before kindergarten?

To 10 comfortably is plenty; to 20 with some teen-wobbles is common and fine. Kindergarten teaches the sequence — it’s literally in the curriculum. The pillars that predict a smooth start are one-to-one correspondence, cardinality, and subitizing, none of which appear on a number line.

Should my child write numbers before school starts?

Recognizing a few numerals is lovely; writing them is a fine-motor skill on its own timeline. Many kids who deeply understand five can’t draw a 5 — the hand lags the mind by a year at this age. Trace casually if it’s fun; drop it if it isn’t.

Is my child behind if they still count on fingers?

Fingers are the original math manipulative and a sign of engagement, not delay — they’re literally a built-in subitizing tool. Finger-counting fades on its own as facts consolidate, years from now. At four and five it should be encouraged, not trained away.

What about counting apps for preschoolers?

Our honest take: at this age, number sense is built through hands — touching the crackers, moving the cars, feeling that five is heavier than two. A screen can show quantity but can’t hand it to them. Ten minutes of dice and snack-counting beats any app we’ve seen, and it comes with a parent attached.

My child knows all five pillars already. Now what?

Enjoy it — and resist the urge to accelerate into worksheets. Deepen instead: count backwards, count by twos, play “how many are hiding under the cup,” build teen numbers with ten-and-some-loose. Depth at this age beats speed every time; the grades ahead will supply plenty of forward motion.
