Why the alphabet is the wrong order
A, B, C is a filing system, not a teaching sequence. Why nearly every serious phonics program starts somewhere else, what the letter order costs a five-year-old who follows it — and the one pair of letters that settles the argument on its own.
Your child can sing the alphabet. It took three weeks, everyone clapped, and it felt like the on-ramp to reading. Then you bought the workbook that starts at A is for apple, worked dutifully through B is for ball, and somewhere around F it stopped feeling like progress. Nothing was being read. Twenty-six letters were being collected.
That is not a failure of effort, and it is not a slow child. It is a sequencing problem, and it has a clean explanation: the alphabet was never designed to teach anyone to read. It is an ordering convention, inherited from Phoenician scribes and kept because it makes lists findable. Nobody chose it for its teaching properties, because it has none. Ask what it would take to get a child reading a real word as fast as possible and you get a completely different order — and that order is what most structured phonics programs, including ours, actually use.
The pair that settles it
Start with the strongest version of the argument, because it takes one sentence.
In the alphabet, b and d are two letters apart. They are also the single most confusable pair in early reading — same circle, same stick, mirrored. A four-year-old who has just spent a year learning that a cup is a cup whether it faces left or right is now told that this shape means one thing and its reflection means another. That is a genuinely hard perceptual ask, and the alphabet schedules the two of them back to back, at the exact moment the child has the least experience to tell them apart.
Reversals at four and five are developmentally ordinary and mostly resolve on their own. But teaching the pair together is what turns an ordinary wobble into a durable one, because the two letters get encoded alongside each other, in the same lesson, in the same week. Any order chosen for teaching separates them deliberately. In our sequence d arrives in week 8 and b in week 17 — nine weeks apart, on purpose, by which point d is automatic and has nothing to compete with.
The alphabet does the same thing again with p and q, and again with m and n. It is not malicious. It simply was not thinking about your child.
What each order actually unlocks
The second argument is arithmetic. A teaching order should be judged by how quickly it lets a child read something — not recognize a letter, not sing a song, but decode an actual word. So: after six letters, how many words can be built?
We ran the count with the same parser that gates our packets, and the rule matters, so here it is. A word counts only if every sound in it is one the child has been taught. That excludes bead and feed from the alphabetical column, because ea and ee are single sounds nobody has met yet — a child who has learned e on its own will sound bead as /b/-/e/-/a/-/d/ and get nothing. It also excludes face, where the e on the end reaches back and changes the a. Two to four letters, no abbreviations.

Roughly two to three times the vocabulary, at every checkpoint, for no extra work. And the raw count understates the difference, because it says nothing about which words. The alphabetical six give you add, bad, bed, cab, dad, fed. The other six give you sat, sit, pin, pan, tap, nap, ant, spin, snap — enough to write a sentence a child can read to somebody, which is the moment the whole thing becomes worth doing.
One myth worth killing while we are here, because we published it ourselves and had to correct it: you will sometimes read that alphabetical order does not reach a readable word until somewhere around letter fifteen. That is false. A, b, c gives you cab at letter three. The alphabet's problem is not that it produces nothing. It is that it produces thin, slow returns while scheduling the hardest confusion first.
Why those six, specifically
The s, a, t, p, i, n opening is not folklore; it comes out of the British synthetic-phonics tradition and shows up, with small variations, in most structured programs. Three things are being optimized at once.
A vowel arrives immediately. No vowel, no word — and the alphabet's vowels are scattered at positions 1, 5, 9, 15 and 21. Getting a in at position two and i at position five means words become possible almost at once.
The first sound is one you can hold. Sssss can be stretched for as long as a child has breath, which makes it the easiest possible sound to hear inside a word and the easiest to blend into the next one. Compare starting with b, which is over in a fraction of a second and is nearly impossible to say without an accidental vowel stuck to the end. Which brings us to the mistake almost every parent makes.
The letters are frequent and their sounds are reliable. These six behave themselves. They do not have a soft version, they are not silent anywhere useful, and they turn up constantly.
The most common error at the kitchen table is adding a vowel to a consonant: saying buh, duh, suh instead of /b/, /d/, /s/. It sounds harmless. It is not. A child taught suh-a-tuh will blend those three and hear suhatuh, which is not a word, and no amount of trying harder will make it one.
Say the consonant as bare as you can manage. Stretch the ones that stretch — /sss/, /mmm/, /nnn/, /fff/ — and clip the ones that don't. This one habit is worth more than any product you can buy, including ours.
What “decodable” actually means
A decodable text is one where every word can be sounded out using the letters taught so far. Not mostly. Every word. The instant one word cannot be, the child learns the wrong lesson — that reading is guessing from pictures and first letters, with an adult to confirm. That habit is far harder to remove than it was to acquire.
The trap is that adults cannot see the violations. Here is the example that made us stop trusting proofreading: the word ship, at a point where s, h, i and p have all been taught. Every letter is known. It looks completely fair. But sh is a single sound the child has not met, so they will do exactly what they were told and sound it /s/-/h/-/i/-/p/ — and get nothing. You cannot catch this by reading carefully, because you have read sh as one sound for thirty years and your eye no longer separates it.
So we don't proofread for it. Every child-facing word in our reading packets is parsed into sounds by a script and checked against the sounds taught by that week. If one word fails, the build fails and no PDF is produced. A week that would reach your kitchen table with ship in it never gets made.
The words that break the rule
English will not fully cooperate, and pretending otherwise is its own kind of dishonesty. The, is, I, a, my, to, said — the most common words in the language are disproportionately the ones that don't play by the rules. A sequence that admits none of them until the phonics catches up produces pages that read like word lists for months.
The honest solution is a small, named exception: heart words, learned by sight, introduced deliberately and counted. Our first is a in week 2 and our second is I in week 5; the and is land in week 6, which is the week a real passage first becomes possible. The child is told plainly that these few we simply know. Everything else on the page can be sounded out — and because that promise holds, it is worth making.
Even go belongs on that list, which surprises people. It looks perfectly decodable: two letters, both taught. But the o on the end of a short word says its own name, so a child who has only met short /o/ will read it to rhyme with got. A correct parse and a wrong reading — the same trap as ship, wearing a friendlier face.
Why we wrote this
We make The Sunday Packet — weekly printed packets, twenty quiet minutes a day, no app and no screen. We had to work all of this out to build the reading sequence, and it seemed worth publishing whether or not you ever subscribe. Our order runs s a t p i n, then m d g o c k, then the remaining vowels, then the digraphs, then split vowels. First real word in week 3. First sentence in week 4. First whole passage in week 6. Weeks 1 and 2 have no reading page at all, because one letter makes no words and a blending drill with nothing to blend is filler that a parent spots immediately.
Reading opens this fall for Pre-K through Grade 2 — there is a waitlist on the homepage, and it decides who hears first. It stops at Grade 2 on purpose: before roughly Grade 3 children are learning to read, and after it they are reading to learn, which is a different job that school already assigns. We would rather do the first one properly. Math is available today.
Fair questions, straight answers
Should I stop teaching the alphabet song, then?
No — keep it. The song teaches letter names and alphabetical order, both of which are genuinely useful for spelling aloud, using an index, and eventually a dictionary. Just don't mistake it for reading instruction. Names and sounds are two different pieces of knowledge, and it is the sounds that unlock words. A child can happily learn the song while being taught sounds in a different order; they do not interfere.
My child's school teaches letters alphabetically. Does that undo this?
Not at all, and you do not need to fight the school about it. Letter-of-the-week programs mostly build letter recognition, which is a real and separate skill. What they often skip is systematic blending — pushing sounds together into words. That is the part worth adding at home, and it is additive rather than contradictory. Your child will simply meet d at school in October and blend it here in week 8.
What if my child already knows some letters out of order?
Good — almost every child does, usually starting with the letters in their own name. A structured sequence isn't claiming they've never seen b; it's controlling what appears on the page, so that reading practice never requires a guess. Known letters just make their week easier when it arrives. Nothing is wasted.
How long until my child reads an actual book?
They read their first real word in week 3, their first sentence in week 4, and a five-line story in week 6. A trade picture book is a different and later thing, because those are written for adults to read aloud and are full of words no beginner can decode — which is why an early reader who “reads” one is usually reciting it from memory. That's fine as a shared pleasure. Just don't use it to measure decoding.
Is this the same as phonics versus whole language?
It sits inside that argument but it is narrower. The evidence for teaching phonics systematically is about as settled as education research gets. The question here is only which order, given that you have decided to teach it — and on that, the alphabet has no case at all. It was chosen for filing, centuries before anyone studied how children learn to decode.
